Jacksonville Jaguars performance center set to begin building phase

The Jacksonville Jaguars are a step closer to a new sports performance center.

The permits for the foundation of the Sports Performance Center Complex were approved this month by the city's Building Inspections Division. The approval gives the green light for the $3 million phase.

The overall complex at 1270 E. Beaver St. is projected to cost $120 million. The total project was approved by the city, which owns the property, last year. The city and the Jaguars NFL franchise are splitting the cost and will provide some indoor practice and meeting areas near TIAA Bank Field along with outdoor practice fields.

The building will cover 127,087 square feet. Times-Union reports have led to speculation the facility will be a hint of what could result in an entirely new stadium for Jacksonville.

Officials within Mayor Lenny Curry’s administration have said the performance center will lead to the Jaguars being more competitive in attracting top-tier NFL players to the franchise. While the claim might be debatable, it couldn’t hurt given the Jags have won a collective four games dating back to the 2020 season.

The Jaguars hired Doug Pederson this year in hopes of launching a new era with the former Super Bowl-winning coach who captured the Lombardi Trophy with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The performance center foundation will be constructed by The Haskell Co. and is projected to be completed by the beginning of the 2023 NFL season.

The new location for the Jacksonville Fire Museum is closer to reality.

The city approved permits this month for the foundation to be poured at 620 E. Bay St. for the museum honoring the history of firefighters. The museum has been at 1406 Gator Blvd.

The relocation will also make way for Shad Khan, owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars, to possibly begin work on his riverfront complex of hotels, restaurants and entertainment establishments.

The museum relocation will cost $370,000 alone for the foundation. The work will be conducted by Hygema House Movers Inc.
