In April 1909, New York Highlanders first baseman Hal Chase was hospitalized with smallpox near the team’s spring training site in Georgia. The rest of the squad — which would be renamed the Yankees in 1913 — took an overnight train to Richmond, Virginia, where the Highlanders were scheduled to play an exhibition game against a minor league team before the regular season started.

But first, the players would need to undergo medical examinations to make sure they were not infected with the disease or at risk of spreading it to others. Informed about the Highlanders’ situation, Surgeon General Walter Wyman sent Dr. Joseph Goldberger, a physician from the U.S. Public Health Service, to Richmond “to pass upon the matter for the Government before the party be allowed to cross the Potomac,” as The New York Times reported.

José Mourinho and Conference League champion Roma are stepping up their ambitions with the signing of former Juventus forward Paulo Dybala. Roma says the 28-year-old Argentina international has agreed to a three-year deal. His contract at Juventus expired three weeks ago. Dybala says “the speed and determination with which Roma demonstrated just how much they wanted me made all the difference." Dybala scored 115 goals across all competitions in seven seasons at Juventus and helped the Bianconeri to 12 trophies which included five Serie A titles. But the often-injured striker fell out of favor under Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri after the Turin club signed Dušan Vlahović in January.

A court that was considering a case against Dieter Wedel, one of Germany’s best-known TV directors and scriptwriters, says that he has died. He was 82. The Munich state court said that Wedel died in Hamburg on July 13, German news agency dpa reported. The court had been expected to announce Wednesday whether a case in which he was charged with raping an aspiring actress in 1996 would go to trial. Wedel was the first prominent figure in the country named when the #MeToo movement targeting alleged sexual abusers in the media and the arts gathered pace in Germany four years ago. He denied claims by several women that he pressured them for sex.

Four people have died in a gas explosion at a six-story residential building in the Chinese port city of Tianjin. State broadcaster CCTV said Wednesday that 13 other people had injuries that were not life-threatening. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, but it points to the deterioration of infrastructure following more than three decades of breakneck economic growth. Photos from the scene showed upper stories of the building caved in but no obvious damage to neighboring units. Tianjin lies less than an hour by train from Beijing and has long been one of China's most developed and international cities.

India’s top court has granted bail to a Muslim journalist more than three weeks after he was detained for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through his tweets. The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered fact-checker Mohammed Zubair’s immediate release from jail, saying there was no justification for keeping him in custody. Zubair was arrested last month by Delhi police over a 2018 tweet on charges of insulting Hindu religious beliefs. Police in Uttar Pradesh state later charged him in a separate case for using the term “hatemongers” for Hindu monks who made inflammatory comments about Muslims. Zubair’s arrest is seen by critics as the latest example of shrinking media freedom in India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

Hertha Berlin says winger Marco Richter could be back in training next month after treatment for a testicular tumor. Hertha says the tumor is malignant but was caught early enough that it could be removed without chemotherapy. Sporting director Fredi Bobic says Richter will get the time he needs to recover and adds he could return to training in two to three weeks. Richter is one of three Bundesliga players undergoing treatment recently for testicular tumors. They can be benign and do not always lead to a diagnosis of cancer.

Britain’s Conservative Party are choosing the two finalists in the contest to replace Boris Johnson. It comes on the day Johnson makes his final appearance in Parliament as prime minister. Johnson will face derisive opposition politicians and weary Conservatives at the weekly Prime Minister’s Questions session, the last one before Parliament's summer recess. Later, Conservative lawmakers will hold a final elimination vote to cut the field of three remaining candidates down to two. Former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt are battling for the run-off spots. The two finalists will go to a vote by all 180,000 members of the Conservative Party, with a winner scheduled to be announced Sept. 5.

High diesel prices are driving up the cost of everything, from groceries to Amazon orders and furniture. That's because nearly everything that’s delivered, whether by truck, rail or ship, uses diesel fuel. Truckers are turning down hauling jobs in the states with the most expensive diesel. They're choosing lighter loads and in some cases working longer hours to make up for the money lost on fuel. Farmers harvesting hay and planting corn with diesel-fired tractors are taking a hit of thousands of dollars per week. And many of these high costs are passed down to consumers.

Democrat Elaine Luria of Virginia and Republican Adam Kinzinger of Illinois will lead questioning in the closing summer hearing of the House's Jan. 6 committee on Thursday night. Luria and Kinzinger are from different parties but agree emphatically that the investigation into the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol is worth sacrificing their political careers. Kinzinger has already decided not to seek reelection after facing the prospect of taking on another Republican incumbent in a newly drawn district. Luria's swing district in the Norfolk area has been redrawn, and she faces a tougher reelection bid in November.

European Union Commissioners are putting the finishing touches to a drastic plan to make sure that any Russian cutoff of natural gas supplies to the bloc will not disrupt industries and send an additional chill through homes next winter. The European Commission is to present its proposals later Wednesday so that EU member states can discuss it at an emergency meeting of energy ministers next Tuesday. The last-minute discussion comes at a time when the International Monetary Fund is warning about the power Russian President Vladimir Putin could wield by choking off the 27-nation bloc.

The United Nations says in a new report that despite an overall improved security situation in Afghanistan, at least 700 people have been killed since the Taliban took over last year. The majority of those casualties were linked to attacks by the Islamic State group’s affiliate in the country, a bitter rival of the Taliban. In its report Wednesday, the U.N. also highlighted the poor situation of women and girls since the Taliban takeover and how they have been stripped of many of their human rights under Afghanistan’s current rulers. After their takeover, the Taliban quickly started enforcing a sharply tougher line, issuing harsh edicts against women.
