A tornado warning is more urgent than a tornado watch, so it should be taken seriously. A watch means conditions are favorable for a tornado to develop, but there's no immediate threat.National Weather Service

Residents in parts of Juniata and Perry counties should take shelter immediately due to tornado warning being issued by the National Weather Service.

The tornado warning is in effect over the central parts of both counties until 9:15 p.m., the NWS said.

The storm is expected to be near New Bloomfield and Newport by 8:40 p.m., then Shermansdale and Duncannon around 9 p.m. Thompsontown, Port Royal, Landisburg and Mifflintown could also see significant damage.

Hazards in the storm include hail up to 2 inches in diameter, plus the possibility of a tornado, the NWS said. This could cause flying debris that will be dangerous to those caught without shelter.

Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed and damage to roofs, windows and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely.

Just outside of the tornado warning zone, the NWS has also issued a severe thunderstorm warning.

The storm is bringing 2-inch hail and 60 mph wind gusts.

The NWS warns that people and animals outdoors will be injured, and that hail damage to roofs, siding, windows and vehicles should be expected. Wind damage will also impact these items as well as trees.

Locations for the severe thunderstorm warning include Marysville, Newport, Duncannon, New Bloomfield, Spruce Hill, Mexico, Loysville, Ickesburg, Walnut, Shermansdale, Rockville and Mifflintown.

For those in the tornado warning area, the NWS says take cover now. Move to the basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. Anyone outdoors, whether in a mobile home or vehicle, should move to the closest substantial shelter to protect from flying debris.

Much of central Pa. is under a tornado watch until 11 p.m.
